"My younger brother, Kelly James Heyer,
died this morning on Delta flight 5191 as it was taking off from Lexington, KY.
Kelly was 27.
I don’t know why I’m writing this blog. Maybe subconsciously I think it will be
therapeutic. But since I consider you my family I thought I should tell you.
My brother was a lot like me. We both played trumpet in school. He was much
better than me, though. I remember when I was a senior asking my Jr. High band
instructor if he was better than me. My teacher replied, without hesitation,
“Oh, God yes!”
We played trumpet together at church a lot at Christmas and Easter. That will
always be one of my favorite memories with Kelly.
He was also involved in theatre, along with me. Again it was special to share
the stage with him.
Kelly was a traveler. When he was in college he studied in France for a
semester. For the first couple of weeks he was homesick but once he adjusted he
really found a passion for traveling. He graduated with a degree in French and
always wanted to go back. And occasionally he did once he started flying with
Delta/ComAir. He saw much of Europe…sometimes on a quick weekend getaway.
I didn’t see him much once he started working full-time. He was always flying
someplace. But he really loved his job. I was surprised to learn that he mostly
flew on the small jets, like flight 5191. I asked him if it was tough being the
only flight attendant on these flights. But he loved being able to work
one-on-one with the passengers, making sure they were comfortable. He even got
my mother to enjoy flying!
He was a wonderful brother and a terrific uncle to his nieces and nephews. Any
time a jet would fly over our house my kids would ask if Uncle Kelly was up
there.
The last time I saw Kelly was at this year’s WE Fest. He came with a friend and
was our guest. I can tell you that the Froggy staff loved him as well. He always
had a way of being the life of the party wherever he went.
I’m going to Lexington with my older brother and our parents. I’m not sure
what’s going to happen when we get there or how long I’ll be gone. But I’ll keep
Pete Moss posted on what’s happening and he’ll be able to share this information
with you.
What I’m saying isn’t meant to entertain you. And I’m not asking for your
sympathy. I just want you to know what’s happening in my life. I’ve shared my
wedding with you. You’ve been there at the births of my three kids. It just
feels right that I share this with you now."

Kelly Heyer: Dreamed of working in U.S.
Embassy
By Michelle Ku
HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER
Kelly Heyer, the flight
attendant on Comair Flight 5191, had dreams of working for the
U.S. Embassy in France, said former roommate Ferdy Hossain.
Heyer was fluent in
French and wanted to work as an interpreter, Hossain said.
"I almost want to cry
right now," Hossain said. "It's not fair. He's not even 30 and
he's gone."
Heyer, 27, was one of
two Comair crew members killed in yesterday's crash at Blue
Grass Airport. He was single and lived in the Cincinnati area.
Heyer was originally from Detroit Lakes, Minn.
Heyer had been a Comair
flight attendant since July 2004 and was based at John F.
Kennedy International Airport in New York.
Heyer mostly flew routes
on the East Coast to destinations such as New York, Maine,
Boston and Atlanta, Hossain said.
Heyer was recently
appointed base representative for the flight attendants union,
said Tracy Riley, a union secretary and fellow Comair flight
attendant.
"He was a stand-up
individual," Riley said. "He was very professional, loved the
job."
Hossain said he met
Heyer when he was looking for a roommate two years ago.
Heyer was a nice,
laid-back and easygoing person, Hossain said.
He never heard Heyer
raise his voice to anyone during the time he knew him, Hossain
said.
Heyer was a big movie
buff and the two of them would often hang out and go to clubs
together, Hossain said.
"He used to love his
vodka and tonic," Hossain said. "Next time I go to a bar, I'll
drink one for him."
As soon as Hossain heard
the news that Heyer had been killed, he called Heyer's cell
phone, which went to voice mail.
He doesn't know why he
tried calling Heyer, but he did, Hossain said. "My mind didn't
want to believe it was my ex-roommate, Kelly."

Hello Admin -
I wanted to send you
an email about Kelly James Heyer. I flew for
Comair from 2004-2005. Though I did not ever fly
with Kelly I do remember talking to him when I
would see him around the airport or the lounge.
He was such a gentle spirit who was very
friendly and had a beautiful smile. When he
would walk into the lounge there seemed to be a
light that surrounded him. That light to me was
his smile. Such a beautiful person who will be
sadly missed.
Thank you.

Kelly was such a fun
and wonderful man! I first met Kelly during one
of his many months of sitting reserve in the
lounge in CVG. He was always in a good mood and
was so loving and nice with everyone he met. My
fondest memory of him is when he helped with
informational leafletting in New York in March
2006 during our 1st round of court sessions. The
3rd day of court was cancelled, so myself,
another dear friend, and Kelly leafletted
outside the international terminal in JFK. Kelly
and I had such a great time and got to really
know each other at that moment; the funniest
part of the day was when we realized the
international passengers couldn't speak or read
English!!! They just took our flyers, smiled at
us and asked for directions. We giggled and
wondered to ourselves if anyone understood what
we were doing.
Kelly, we love you and will dearly miss you my
friend. I pray you are resting in peace and I
will always remember you.
Until we see each other again...
Erin, Comair F/A
